Planning a Long Drive With A Baby? Here’s What You Need To Know

Travelling with a child can be a real fuss. There is no age for babies where you can assume you’ll enjoy a relaxing trip. When you have a newborn, you have to keep checking on them frequently. If you have a toddler, you have to keep them entertained to make the journey easier for you.

If you are a first-time parent and travelling with your baby alone for the first time, then you should be well-prepared for the journey ahead. If you do not know where to start, here is a guide for you.

1.  Ensure Safety In The Car

The most important thing to consider when travelling with a baby is the safety of the baby. You can not put your baby freely on the car seat or in your lap. It can be highly dangerous for their fragile backbone and neck. Make sure you choose the best car seat at Maxi-Cosi NZ for your baby. If the baby is an infant, choose the one that faces the rear of the car. However, if your kid is a toddler and has a strong hold of their neck, you can look for booster seats.

Make sure you display a ‘Baby on Board’ sticker at the back of your car so that other drivers remain vigilant too.

2.  Keep Spare Clothes

Kids can get nauseous in the car, especially if you are moving up and down hills, and taking meandering turns. Your kid may even vomit because of the fast-moving car. Secondly, kids get hungry often so you might have to give them snacks too. Their clothes can get dirty very quickly.

It would be smart to keep one or two outfits in your backpack or bag to avoid hassle at the time of need. This way, you will not have to open the entire suitcase and find clothes for the baby to wear. You can change their clothes quickly and be on your way.

3.      Keep Something For The Entertainment

Small babies might not make your long drive a nightmare as they tend to sleep most hours of the day, but a toddler can be a real fuss. When you are travelling with a toddler, make sure you organize a few activities to keep them entertained. You can look for car games on the Internet. Some of the most popular games involve looking outside the window and spotting the things you see, or colour games. You should also keep some nursery rhymes and cartoons on hand.

4.  Stock Up On Snacks

Lastly, what is a long drive without snacks? Just like adults, kids like to munch on things. Make sure you keep multiple options for your kids. Feeding healthy foods such as baby carrots and corn is good but make sure you keep a few of your child’s favorite snacks that you might not offer them much otherwise. You can opt for sugary treats, potato chips, and chocolates. Offering your child their favorite snacks in the car may make them think positively about car drives, and they have something to look forward to during the drive.
